Silently Noticed by Katelyn - May 2013 Scholarship Essay

My name is Katelyn Bant, I am currently studing a Bio/Chemistry major at Hamline University in St. Paul, MN. My favorite classroom memory happened when I was awarded the "Beaker Award" in my organic chemistry class. This award is given once a year and choosen by the professor. What makes this memory special is how the award was announced. In high school, I recieved many awards for my success in academics, and in college the level of producing top grades takes much more committment. My professor announced that the award winner was not the student with the top grade in the class, but the top student who showed the most potential for a future in the medical field. She also stated that the winner was a silent worker, who works beyond the required commitment without the need for attention. The silent hours spent in the classroom, lab, and tutor sessions outside of regular class showed  desire and promise for a future in medicine. These words spoken by my professor before she announced my name gave me the realization that I can achieve success in the competitive area of medicine, and I do not have to be perfect in academics. I aspire a future in medicine, and recieving recognition for hard work is a memory I will use to continue my degree with success.
