Mr. "Fig" by Kate - March 2023 Scholarship Essay

Deciding on a career path, or what to “become” in life is not always a simple decision. If one had asked me before High School, the answer would have been a simple “I have no idea.” However, after working through High School, I have been able to focus on a path forward that gives promise of a rewarding career and life.
Going to college to become an art teacher is now an easy choice to make. My passion for art is in large part due to one of my own art teachers, Mr. Figliozzi. His ability to make artistic expression fun is a large part of his success. Also, his attention to detail when explaining various artistic techniques is both insightful and motivating. Over the years, I have enjoyed each of his classes. That enjoyment inspired me to become part of National Art Honor Society, ultimately serving as vice president, then President of the organization. In this society, I had the pleasure of selling mini canvasses that we created, speaking to students during elective night regarding art courses and volunteering in the community using our art skills. It showed me the opportunities that art can be incorporated in my life. His hard work and dedication over the years helped so many students like myself develop what will be a passionate, lifelong interest for art.
In conclusion, my hope is one day to pass along that passion, instilling in future students what I have learned from Mr. Figliozzi. Most importantly, I will make a positive impact in children’s lives every day. My goals are to have the student involved in community projects, such as murals like Urban Artworks, park sculptures, Envelope Exchange and Rethink Waste Projects to name a few. These art projects are not only good for the students, but the community gets to experience them as well. I look forward to the satisfaction of inspiring young artists in pursuit of their dreams and passion for art, just as he has done for me.
