The Vision Beyond by KaShauna - May 2023 Scholarship Essay
The reason I picked biology specifically is because I know that to achieve my goal, I must have some background in sciences. Through high school, I remember being very intrigued and connected to Biology because of the different intellectual experiences I had when diving into each organism’s history and function. I also decided on Biology or centered around biology majors because of the way it is very versatile in the skills and concepts that you learn in this specific science. The more I learn about the origin and characteristics of organisms, the better my understanding will be of the purposes and struggles of different conditions throughout history. By being a biology major I can be on my journey to achieving my goal as an exhilarating medical professional who makes a change.
I was always interested in medicine because of the overall effect it has on another person. As a child, I always wanted to be a doctor. However, when people asked what kind of doctor or if I could describe one that interested me, I never had a specific answer. I just remember sitting on my living room floor, inches away from my TV, with a joyous smile every time a person with scrubs walked across the screen, thinking one day that’ll be me. Yes, I want to help others and be gifted with the knowledge of medicine, but I overall want to be a figure that most can trust. A model that most African Americans would happily rely on when asking for help and feel comfort and safe being in my care. There are many times in my life when I don't see African Americans being presented in careers, and for me, I want that. The reason I picked Pre-Med specifically is because of the lack of benefiting results for African Americans when given medical as opposed to other races. I specifically would like to become an OBGYN in which I would change and better the lowered statistical outcomes for Black women in the reproduction division. I am tired of seeing the many unnecessary deaths and complications when it comes to Black women’s pregnancy and childbirth. I do not want to keep mourning for another Black woman just because of the lack of knowledge, care, and understanding put forth into their medical needs. I aspire to be another addition to the Black movement that is an uprising in the medical field. By being in the Pre-Med program I would learn not only about my own health and well-being but be a possibility for many other Black people. I know that I cannot be a proficient learner in all medical things, but I aspire to be able to at least have the intellect to help others medically and increase the livelihood of my people.
