Why I want to be a teacher by Kasadie - April 2025 Scholarship Essay

My name is Kasadie and I am a Senior in High School. I am dyslexic and have struggled with this since I was a little girl. It was the summer before 4th grade before I was finally diagnosed even though my parents had been trying to get me help since the end of my kindergarten year when they noticed that something wasn't right with my learning. Even after getting the official diagnosis, it wasn't until I was in junior high that I was even able to get a 504 plan as the elementary educators said that I wasn't below the 25% level to require that much help. Now that I have a 504 plan and know what accommodations I need and what works I am proud to state that I currently have a 3.89 GPA and have had several terms with a 4.0.
I want to go to College and get a degree in Elementary Education so that I can teach 1st-3rd grade students. I also want to get a minor in Special Education so that I can help be a tool to help families notice and combat early detection for learning disabilities so that maybe these students won't have to suffer as long as I did not know what the issue was. I am currently participating in a concurrent enrollment program so that by the end of my senior year I will not only have my high school diploma but I will also have enough hours and applied for my CDA which would allow me to teach at any preschool.
I think that there are many children who struggle with learning disabilities that are going undiagnosed because teachers don’t know what to look for. I want to make a difference in children’s lives and help then when they struggle and be an advocate for them to get the education they deserve. Each child both with and without a learning disability deserve to have the best education possible and that is what I want to strive for in my future is to help make that happen.
