How my English class changed my life by Karly - August 2016 Scholarship Essay
Throughout high school, I’ve not only learned, but grown incredibly. I’ve learned something from every class that I’ve taken but the class that really stands out to me is English. I’ve never been wonderful when it comes to writing essays or using big vocabulary. I've also never excelled in English, I simply did what was needed to get by.
My freshman and sophomore year of high school, I had an average English teacher who was very passionate about what she taught. However, I never felt encouraged, so like every year before, I did what was needed to get by. Junior year I started a new school which meant a new English teacher. Not only did she love what she taught, but she loved her students just as much. She encouraged me to dive deeper into English and learn more. She quickly became not only a part of my school life, but my personal life as well. She helped me through my lowest points and taught me so much. Not only did she encourage me to do better in English, but in every other class as well. Her class taught me more than just how to write papers and annotate books. Her class taught me how to treat and love others. English helped me grow as a student because I had a support system that I’ve never had before along with the exact encouragement I needed to accomplish my goals.
I’ve learned the most from my English class because I wasn’t just taught how to do things by the books. I was taught how to chase my dreams and never give up. I was pushed beyond my comfort zone and challenged in ways I’ve never been challenged before. In conclusion, my English class taught me everything from how to be a better student, to how to be a better person.
