Varsity Tutors Scholarship Essay by Karen - August 2024 Scholarship Essay
Have you ever given any thought as to the reasons behind your career decision or your desire to accomplish your goals to become something? Choosing a career and seeking a purpose in this world is one of the most crucial decisions I’ve ever had to make. There's a lot more to it than determining what you'll do for a living. The significance of choosing a career cannot be overstated, but once we do discover the right one that we genuinely enjoy, it ultimately shapes who we are.
Thinking about the future and what lies ahead has always been on my mind. The ‘what ifs’ roam through my head daily and at times I find myself pondering deeply about the future. Before going to college, most of my decisions were set on being a music producer. I had spent my whole high school career preparing for that route, but I soon realized that it was not what I truly wanted to pursue and that it was a vision brought upon me by others. Ultimately, I had been pressured to be something I knew wholeheartedly I could not and did not want to be. In that moment, I had to be honest and take up the courage for myself; to instead venture out and explore a new career path.
Just short of three years ago, I decided to begin my quest of finding what was meant for me. Despite the loud voices and strong opinions around me hoping to instill a career I wasn’t passionate about, I remember listening and being so enamored of my mother’s experience stepping into motherhood. Along with her stories, I could not forget the first time during class at the age of twelve when we entered into a lesson about the anatomy of the female body and the reproductive system. Entirely struck by the lesson and soaking in information that was wholly new to me, I began to ask questions. I was completely and utterly astonished by the process when the video had been shown to me in animation and I knew I wanted to be just like those assisting to provide new and old mothers a warm welcome and transition into motherhood in the best way they could. The notion occurred to me then, as it does today, that the body of a woman is capable of withstanding unbelievable changes and it is simply beautiful. From shedding itself to constructing life within, is something I might not ever cease to be amazed by or be in awe of. My interest in motherhood and the creation of life developed my aspirations to become a Labor and Delivery Nurse.
Additionally, some of my biggest career goals that I seek to accomplish in the near future are to find opportunities for growth in this field, to build on self-confidence, to gain new relationships, and to garner connections and experiences along the way. I hope to obtain my BSN degree and gain knowledge in my career by studying tirelessly and applying what I learn in clinicals and in the classroom, at my local hospital through volunteer work. Nothing, in my opinion, is more fulfilling than assisting those in need and naturally, as an RN, you must put your patient's needs ahead of your own while assisting others and guiding them through some of their toughest and most challenging times.
Furthermore, I feel that nursing is my calling because I truly think that if what I hope to do doesn’t bless anyone else it isn’t from God. I had to ponder and sit back to ask myself, does nursing serve a high purpose in my life? Am I willing to put others before myself? If I am to think of myself to be an aspiring nurse and I'm convinced it is my true purpose and calling to add value to the world, how hypocritical would it be to go against that? With that, it is my goal and hope to be a Labor and Delivery nurse, one who prioritizes the needs of patients and provides competent and compassionate treatment.
In short, as I embark on a journey as a future nursing student, my next big educational goal is to earn a BSN degree, pass the NCLEX to become a Registered Nurse, and the impact I hope to aspire is not because I desire merely to save lies but also to make women feel valued and empowered.
