Bettering the World, One Quote at a Time by Karelyn - November 2018 Scholarship Essay

“And maybe that’s what we should be trying for at the end of our lives… for the world to be less good without us.” –Hank Green

This quote by Hank Green would be my senior yearbook quote. It’s short and sweet and gets across my main mission in life: to make the world a better place. I have watched as many of my closest friends have suffered from every struggle imaginable. I have experienced depression directly throughout my entire high school life. I have watched as my boyfriend struggles with anxiety and my closest friends deal with immense conflicts that they have a difficult time handling. I have watched much of these struggles helplessly, wishing I knew what I could do to make their lives better and happier. My main goal in life is to alleviate the world’s suffering as much as I can. Many people would say that one person cannot make an impact; I say that an impact cannot be made without one person. If everyone were to focus on making our world better, and on spreading positivity, then our world would get better. I am currently aiming to make a small impact in our world. I am pursuing a career of music, which brings me joy and which brings joy to many other people. Music brings beauty to the world; it brings a purpose to life. Music performance brings a group of people together for one common cause, which is a huge part of what brings about change. Another reason this quote is so important to me is that I work hard to make the world a better place, by using social media as one of my platforms. I run a blog on tumblr dedicated to spreading positivity. To do this, I send anonymous kind messages to people who I feel are doing badly, based on their recent posts. I search keywords for specific days to find people to send kind messages to. Doing this, I have done my best to make a difference in the lives of people who just need a little bit of positivity in their lives. Overall, I work hard to make the world a better place, which is why this quote would be my senior yearbook quote.
