Who I was and who I will be by Karabuning - June 2021 Scholarship Essay
In my sophomore year of high school, I was lost. I was adamant about not going to school. At that high school, every day was dreary. I was a newcomer with no friends. I was separate from the rest of the crowd. People stared at me and seemed uninterested in making friends, and I was terrified as well. It wasn't the country where I was born, and it wasn't the place where I was supposed to be.
When Mrs. Canon became my health science teacher in the second semester, everything changed. She always had faith in me, trusted me, and backed me up. She rekindled the spark in me. She instills in me a sense of purpose in my life. Because of her, I knew what I wanted to do with my life. I want to be exactly like her, someone who gives back to the community while still excelling in her career.
Mrs. Canon is usually busy, yet she makes time to give back to the community. She constantly ensures that each and everyone of her students is reaching their full potential. She is continually starting groups to assist kids figure out what they want to do with their lives. I was one of the fortunate kids who realized the meaning of life. And I'm grateful for the opportunity to do the same thing to others.
I assisted her with camps, organizations, contests, clubs, and volunteer opportunities. I went from being a shy girl who never ventured out of her comfort zone to winning an international competition in Medical Terminology. She has taught me so much, and she is my role model since she is so strong and self-reliant. She has overcome breast cancer. She continues to put in long hours and contribute to the community.
Mrs. Canon and I have volunteered every weekend for the past three years to ensure that the neighborhood in which we reside is a safe and friendly place to live. We made sure that everyone in our school, as well as new pupils, has the most up-to-date knowledge on how to be successful, make the best decisions, and understand the meaning of life.
I aspire to be a doctor, and she kept me from being distracted. No one believed in me when I told them I wanted to be a doctor, and they laughed at me. I simply wanted to give back to the community and make my dream become a reality. I know it will take a long time and a lot of effort, but I am confident that I will succeed.
I am aware that all of my goals and my ambitions will remain dreams if I do not complete my medical degree. Therefore, I am committed to working hard in school and looking for opportunities that could help me make my goals a reality.
