The Purpose of An Education by Kara - April 2015 Scholarship Essay
The purpose of an education is to give you a better understanding of the world than you would had before, preferably one that helps them in their work and personal life. This is true regardless of the subject studied.
One class that shows this very well is Math class. If the teacher taught right, then you leave class understanding more about mathematics, which will help you calculate tips for your dinner bill and tell you how much money you need to make to pay your rent and groceries. This may seem obvious, but it holds true for other subjects as well.
English class does not seem as useful as math at first glance, but it also provides you with knowledge to help you understand the world better, which will in turn help you in your life better. Writing persuasive essays on the motives of Hamlet helps you understand how to put an argument together coherently, which allows you to express yourself better to your friends and colleagues. Also, it gives you an understanding about how grammar works, which helps you with any job that you need to do some sort of writing for, which is just about all of them. Even classes that teach you about the past will give you an understanding about the present.
History classes are like English in the way that they do not seem practical unless you want to become a teacher or an archaeologist. But in reality, learning about the past could help you predict the future. Learning historic events gives you an understanding of cause and effect, which you can apply to current events. This will help you know which bills to vote for, and you can predict what will happen later. For instance, you can learn from the French Revolution and American Revolution that if a government becomes too oppressive, then they will be overthrown. Being educated in History will give you a good idea about what will happen in the near future as an effect to the current cause. This means you will know what to do or not to do to help get the outcome you want.
No matter what the subject is, the purpose of education is to give you a better understanding in something that will help you in your life. And that is what it does.
