My Realization of a Better World by Kara - July 2013 Scholarship Essay

A Journey of Hope-Ana's Story by Jenna Bush.  This book took me to another world when I read it.  As a kid, I was very interested in what was going on in other countries.  My mom gave me this book, not knowing how detailed and gruesome it was at times.  Although it was gruesome, it taught me so much.  In Panama, these women were suffering from rape, HIV, and AIDS with no parents or relatives to help.  I learned how strong these women actually were and that even though their whole world around them was crashing down, they still fought through.  Later on when I became a teenager, I went through a rough time in my life where I developed depression and anxiety.  When in the psychiatric hospital, I picked up that same book and read it again.  The strength it gave me to fight through was unbelievable.  I suddenly remembered what those women went through and all their struggles.  These women harbored their own secrets, and so did I.  I thought to myself, "If they can do it, so can I."  And so I did.  Every now and then I still pick up the book, thinking to myself that without this book and the strength of these women, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
