The Power of the Role by Kara - October 2016 Scholarship Essay
Logically thinking through a scenario, before attempting to find the solution can help with life skills in the real world. Rather than just finding the quickest way to solve the problem but with the incorrect solution. These scenarios do happen in real life, and the setbacks can be detrimental, if you were never taught the proper skills for life. This is why, if the roles were reversed, I would teach math.
It doesn’t really matter what subject in math, just as long as I am teaching students skills that they can apply in real life. When I say skills that can be applied in real life, I’m talking about information on taxes, checkbooks, loans, and how to pay off debt. Personally as of right now, I am super curious on learning how to do all of these things. I know that some schools may have some form of these in a class, I just think that it should be a requirement to take a class in high school about finances. Once graduated from high school, some people may not be going to college and therefore may not know how to properly execute the steps to a secure financial situation. Being a student the number one thing that my favorite teachers do is to help us relate our studies to real life scenarios. This always helps me get the bigger picture of why every little thing is so important.
If I were to be a teacher, I would help my students learn to become productive members of society, by giving them the tools to help them succeed financially. I would soon hope that I will be able to learn how to apply all mathematical applications into the real world of paying bills, and etc. By getting that one teacher that just helps you become a better member of society that you can connect to on a personal level, where you don’t dread going into their class everyday. That would be my goal if I were to swap roles and become a teacher.
