Lesson Learned by Kara - July 2016 Scholarship Essay
Even though math was one of my worst subjects, the most important lesson I learned was from my geometry teacher. During my sophomore year in high school when I was struggling with the class and maintaining my mental health, she was always there for me. Every time I had a problem she would tell me it wasn't my fault and help me through it. When she told me that she also has the same mental illness as me, that helped me even more. She taught me that despite what's going on in my head, despite all of the things that have happened in life, I'm still worthy of good. She taught me that I deserve better friendships and relationships rather than ones where I'm manipulated emotionally due to me being fragile. She taught me that I am capable of doing much more than what I think. She taught me that I am a powerful and invincible young woman.
The most important lesson she taught me was to never give up. Even when I wanted to give up on her class or on myself, she wouldn't let me. She would always write me little encouraging notes so that I could keep going. She would sit with me and keep explaining things to me until she was positive that I completely understood. While other teachers thought that I just wasn't trying, she knew that I was doing my very best. She stayed by my side through trying times. The most important lesson she taught me will stay with me for years to come.
