Why I Chose to Major in Marketing by Kaniyah - April 2025 Scholarship Essay

When I get to college, I plan to major in Marketing. I chose this major because it aligns the most with the path that I am on and will continue on. I know that in this major, I will be able to elevate my personal brand and also my businesses. I currently run a Graphic Designing business and I style hair on the side. These experiences have taught me a lot about what it means to be an entrepreneur, but I'm more excited to learn more about branding, social media strategy, and what it truly means to market. My goal is not to only grow my own business but also help other young aspiring entrepreneurs do the same. I know how it feels to not have the resources or the blueprint to make it happen, but I want to be that person to show them that it's possible. That's why majoring in Marketing makes the most sense to me. It's not just about selling something or social media advertising, but it's about storytelling, building relationships, and making sure the right people hear your "why." I also chose Marketing because I would love to experience life to the fullest. Being able to travel for work, attending different events, collaborating with other entrepreneurs, and growing my network makes the academic work worth while. I'm learning that most times it's not about what you know, but it's about who you know. Marketing is a field that is constantly evolving which excites me and lets me know that I don't have to put myself in a box or limit what I do.
