Developing a Person Who Cares for Others by Kamrynn - February 2024 Scholarship Essay

Growing up, sports played a significant role in my personality and influenced my career choices, whether I watched the sport, playing it, or coaching it. Through my years of experience as an athlete, I unleashed a deep passion for health and fitness. Now having an immense love for science, being able to study the science behind human performance instantly grasped my attention.
When researching the information encompassed within the major, I discovered that exercise science holds immense potential when it comes to empowering others and does so by promoting physical health and vitality. Regular physical activity reduces the risk of developing chronic diseases like heart disease and other health issues. By studying exercise science, I would possess the knowledge and skills to educate and guide individuals on how to take control of their health and their control over themselves.
Along with enhancing physical health, the knowledge learned from my major also plays a crucial role in promoting mental well-being, as engaging in physical activity has been proven to improve overall mood and self-esteem. I could tailor exercise programs to meet the unique needs of athletes and provide them with a sense of control and agency over their mental health. I can also use my major in exercise science to empower people by enabling them to achieve their full potential in athletic performance across multiple areas of well-being.
I started with my first sport, flag football, at just eight years old, and through the years immersed myself in any sport my school offered, including volleyball, basketball, soccer, softball, beach volleyball, and track. My experiences in all these sports challenged my physical abilities, pushed me beyond the mental barriers I had placed, and boosted my self-esteem overall while sparking curiosity about the science behind it all.
By pursuing a degree in exercise science, I will achieve the tools necessary to educate and guide athletes on their journey toward an empowered experience that challenges all areas of their persona within their sport. I have always been a person who cares for others and wants to see others succeed. Pursuing an exercise science degree will allow me to transform lives by improving the well-being and quality of life for individual athletes, their teams, and the communities they come from.
