Dining with Dr. Seuss by Kamryn - February 2016 Scholarship Essay
If given the opportunity to dine with any renowned historical figure, I believe that I would choose to eat with Theodor Seuss Geisel, also known as Dr. Seuss. This revered author is best known for his stories that were able to entertain those of all generations. He revolutionized children’s literature through his exciting and original works. Also, he was able to defy the societal norms placed on authors in order to create such unique and unparalleled works. Ultimately, Dr. Seuss used his gifts to access those of all ages, to specifically impact America’s youth, and transform the literary world of his time.
Firstly, through his works such as Horton Hears a Who, The Cat in a Hat, Oh the Places You’ll Go, and The Lorax, Dr. Seuss was able to captivate and beguile those of any age. He was able to entertain the young by painting his pages with bright colors, utilizing countless rhymes, and constructing an imaginary world that only they could perceive. Then, through his dynamic characters, he was able to highlight several of the dilemmas facing those of older generations while also revealing amiable characteristics that they wish to possess. He was a gifted and brilliant author because he was able to engross both the children reading his works as well as the older siblings, parents, and grandparents who read, and re-read, his timeless pieces.
Similarly, since Theodor Seuss Geisel had a diverse imagination and broad way of thinking, he was able to develop such a fantastic world for children to access. Through his abstract universes, he was more apt to teach kids proper morals and how to succeed in society. He accentuated life lessons such as, everyone can make a difference, everyone deserves to be treated equally, we are all capable of limitless creativity, as well as an infinite amount of others. He transformed and bettered the world of children’s literature in order to increase his influence on youngsters.
Lastly, Dr. Seuss extended beyond the normal writing patterns of his time to create whimsical and exciting works that would remain timeless. He did not conform to the rest of the writing world, but summoned his creativity and imagination to write incredible books. These unprecedented works will forever be remembered for their eccentric and fascinating writing style and patterns. Dr. Seuss once said, “I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living, it's a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope. Which is what I do, and that enables you to laugh at life's realities”. By remaining true to himself and defying society’s norms Dr. Seuss was capable of devising marvelous and exceptionally impactful works.
Dr. Seuss serves as an inspiration for me as I enter the field of elementary education. I hope to one day empower and influence children in a similar fashion to that of Dr. Seuss. Also, I aspire to teach my students priceless life lessons and morals just like Dr. Seuss managed to do through his works. Most importantly, I yearn to defy the norms of today’s education system in order to better teach and inspire my classes. By dining with such a revered historical figure as Dr. Seuss I would be exposed to a truly eye-opening and spectacular opportunity.
