The Welcome I Wish I Had by Kamalla - June 2026 Scholarship Essay

If I could design a project to improve my school or community, I would create a Cultural Connections and Student Success Program for immigrant, first-generation, and culturally diverse students. The purpose of this project would be to help students feel welcomed, understood, and supported as they adjust to new educational environments and cultures. This project is important to me because it is inspired by my own experiences as a child immigrating from Jamaica to the United States and the challenges I faced while adapting to a completely different culture.

When I arrived in the United States at five years old, I quickly realized that fitting in would not be easy. Although English is spoken in Jamaica, I primarily spoke Jamaican Patois, which often caused misunderstandings with my classmates and teachers. I remember feeling confused when people did not understand me or laughed at expressions that were normal in my culture. One experience that has remained with me occurred when I asked a classmate for a “rubber” because I needed an eraser for my pencil. In Jamaica, the term “rubber” commonly refers to an eraser, but my classmate interpreted it very differently. While the situation seems humorous now, it highlighted how difficult it could be to navigate a new culture and communicate effectively. At the time, I did not know that what I was experiencing was culture shock. I only knew that I felt different. It took time to learn American customs, vocabulary, and social expectations. Although I eventually adapted, the experience taught me how isolating it can feel when you are trying to find your place in a new environment. Looking back, I realize that having access to a support program could have helped me feel more confident and connected during that transition.

My proposed Cultural Connections and Student Success Program would focus on creating a welcoming environment for students from diverse backgrounds. The program would pair new students with peer mentors who have experienced similar challenges, whether related to immigration, cultural adjustment, language barriers, or being the first in their family to attend college. These mentors could provide guidance, encouragement, and practical advice to help students navigate their academic and social environments. In addition to mentorship, the program would host cultural awareness workshops and community events that celebrate diversity. Students would have opportunities to share their traditions, languages, and experiences while learning about the backgrounds of others. These events would help foster understanding and reduce stereotypes or misconceptions that can contribute to feelings of exclusion. By encouraging cultural appreciation, schools and communities can create environments where differences are viewed as strengths rather than barriers.

Another important component of the project would focus on mental health and emotional well-being. Adjusting to a new culture, educational system, or community can be stressful. Many students face challenges that are not immediately visible to others, including loneliness, anxiety, financial hardship, and family responsibilities. Through workshops, support groups, and partnerships with counselors, the program would provide resources to help students manage these challenges and develop resilience. My educational background in psychology and sociology has influenced this project idea significantly. While earning my bachelor's degree in Psychology with a minor in Sociology from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, I learned how social environments, cultural experiences, and support systems can impact an individual's success and well-being. These studies helped me understand that students often perform better academically when they feel connected, valued, and supported. Education is not only about learning information; it is also about creating an environment where people can thrive. My current studies in Diagnostic Medical Sonography have further strengthened my belief in the importance of communication, empathy, and human connection. In healthcare, patients often feel vulnerable and uncertain. The ability to listen, understand, and provide reassurance is just as important as technical knowledge. Similarly, students who are adjusting to new environments need support, understanding, and encouragement to reach their full potential.

This project would benefit both students and the broader community. Students would gain confidence, build meaningful relationships, and develop a stronger sense of belonging. Schools would benefit from increased student engagement and a more inclusive campus culture. Communities would become stronger as people from different backgrounds learn to appreciate and support one another. The reason I would choose this project is simple: I understand firsthand what it feels like to be the new student who is struggling to adapt. I know what it is like to feel misunderstood because of cultural differences and to face challenges that others may not recognize. Those experiences shaped me into the person I am today and inspired my passion for helping others. If I could create a program that helps even one student feel more welcomed, supported, and confident than I did during my transition, I would consider it a success. Education has transformed my life by providing opportunities, knowledge, and personal growth. I believe every student deserves the chance to succeed regardless of their background or circumstances. By creating a Cultural Connections and Student Success Program, I would help build a more inclusive school and community where diversity is celebrated, support is readily available, and every individual feels empowered to achieve their goals.
