Shaping A Future by Kallie - February 2024 Scholarship Essay

Theatre and International Thespian Society has had such a huge impact on me throughout high school. It's been my passion and a place where I truly feel at home. I've poured my heart and soul into it, and it's made me grow in so many ways.

Through theatre, I've learned the power of teamwork and collaboration. Being part of a production requires everyone to work together towards a common goal, and it's taught me how to communicate effectively, compromise, and always be there to support my cast and crew members when they most need it. It's amazing how a group of talented and passionate individuals can come together and create something to be so proud of on stage.

Not only have I learned about teamwork, but theatre has also helped me discover more about myself. It's pushed me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to explore different characters and emotions that I didn’t even know I had. I've learned to be vulnerable, to take risks, and to embrace my uniqueness. If I were to compare my freshman year self to me now, I would say I’ve definitely grown more confident in myself and my uniqueness.

In terms of what I've contributed, I've been involved in various aspects of theatre. I've acted in both comedic and dramatic roles and I’ve contributed to the costume crew by making decisions about hair and makeup up and making the costumes. It's been a whirlwind of experiences, and each one has taught me something new.

The impact of theatre on my future plans is undeniable. It’s solidified my decision to be around people and be a source of hope and warmth. What I actually want to be in the future, is a Mortician. It sounds like the complete opposite of theatre, but without my experiences on and offstage, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. Theatre has opened my eyes to the endless possibilities and opportunities that await me in a world where people need a person who can be there for anything.

So, in a nutshell, theatre has shaped me into the person I am today. It's taught me valuable life skills, allowed me to discover myself, and influenced my dreams for the future. I'm forever grateful for the experiences and memories I've made on and off the stage. Theatre will always hold a special place in my heart and now because of it, I can only hope to share those same experiences with others.
