A Cure for Artists by Kalise - May 2023 Scholarship Essay
Hi! My name is Kalise Hankerson and I am a 17 year old Bi-sexual East Mecklenburg High School Senior student. I would like to take the time to address the question at hand. Colleges and universities offer many majors and minors alike, some I didn’t even know existed. As an African- American woman in the art community, distinguishing yourself can be a huge hurdle. I am an upcoming 17 year old artist who also happens to animate and receive commissions while also balancing home and schoolwork.
When I attend college in the fall, I am going to be studying Digital Art. As a young child, I always had this natural talent of drawing. When I had a utensil and paper, I would doodle away like a wolf getting the zoomies. I would trace but soon realized that I can draw things purely from imagination and sugar rushes. Soon, you get good at it, like drawing disproportionate stick people, and cringe environments like the common house, trees, spiky grass, wopsided clouds, and last but not least, the corner sun.
Enough of my incoherent off-topic rabbling, I would like to explain in full detail on why I choose this career. I choose this career because I want to represent African-American women and minorities. The main reason is to better my future and to not let such a talent go to waste. My plans for the future are to make my parents and my family proud along with getting a financially stable job to support myself and help my family when needed. The Art community desperately needs a revolution and I will be the one to start it.
In conclusion, I want to be successful along with representing and supporting LGBTQ+, women, and minorities. I want to prove and testify the traditional ways of thinking and to be a recognizable figure among young and inexperienced artists.
