A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier Ishmael Beah by Kaleigh - July 2013 Scholarship Essay

I originally read "A Long Way Gone" to pass the time last summer. I read it again for Global Literature.I absolutely loved the rawness, intensity, and soul of the book. Ishmael Beah pours every memory he has experiencing Sierra Leone's conflicts as a child solider, orphan, and runaway. This story hooked me and will never leave me. There are no ways to describe this book. It is everything that a book should be. It is honest, entertaining, and it teaches great lessons. It makes the readers realize what life is like for the people living in the estimated 14 or more countries that use child soldiers. Ishmael Beah provides invigorating details about the situations in the scenes of the book. He gives his perspective, but he also gives the perspective of those around him. His struggles and achievements have a great meaning to the reader because the book is such a personal tail. The amount of detail in this book is amazing. Ishmael Beah did a wonderful job letting the world know about some of the atrocities in his life, and I thank him for letting me learn about his life. "A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier" by Ishmael Beah is the best book that I have ever read for school. Everyone everywhere needs to read this book.
