From a Child to Maturity by Kaleb - June 2013 Scholarship Essay
What does college mean to me? College is so much more than just a stepping stone in the road of life. It is the opportunity to succeed at something that is enjoyable, something that is "self-chosen". It is an avenue where character is built up in one's life, where life-long decisions are made, and maturity is reached. For me, college is the avenue I must travel to be what I desire to be. I wish to be a music educator and attending and graduating from college will enable me to achieve that ambition. It will give me the chance to give back to the next generation of high school students a love for music and the passion to succeed past their high school years. Obtaining a degree in music education witll also allow me to have a career that I enjoy in a field that I love. College is not just a group of buildings that one attends to enable further learning. It is a community of people who have the desire to excel in life and set the example to those in younger generations to accomplish something great in their lives. It is a place where character is built and independence is formed in the college student to be their best. Simply stated, college is tool that is used in the journey of life in order to get to where the goal is one has set for their life. Tools are only as good as what they're used for, however. A tool must be used correctly to get the job done that it intended to do. So, college is a place where hard work and perserverance pay off. College is also the place where maturity is attained in those who are determined to succeed. Independence is learned due to the fact that many college students leave home and must learn to live on their own. It is accepting the motivations behind why one has chosen the path they travel -- whether it is to achieve their primary desires or to simply just "get ahead". Maturity is a learned thing and is not an automatic response and attending college is a means of obtaining the knowledge that matures us into responsible adults and citizens. Therefore, I conclude that college is the avenue that I have chosen to obtain the education I need to succeed in the area that I hve chosen to study, it is the tool that I have chosen to help me delight in the career I have chosen to pursue, and it will help me mature into a productive and contributing member of society.
