Caring for the Underserved: My Journey from Nursing to Medicine by Kaitlyn Samantha - February 2025 Scholarship Essay

Reflecting on my passion for nursing and the pursuit of a future in medicine, I have come to realize that my ultimate goal is not just to practice in a clinical setting, but to leverage my skills and knowledge to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others, particularly in underserved communities. This vision has shaped my educational journey, as I am driven to both pursue nursing school as a stepping stone and ultimately attend medical school to further expand my ability to help others. Along the way, I also hope to establish a nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing healthcare disparities and improving access to care.

My journey began with a deep fascination with human biology and an intense desire to care for others. Growing up, I saw firsthand the impact that healthcare can have on people’s lives—whether it was witnessing a close relative struggle with chronic illness or volunteering at a local hospital. These experiences fueled my desire to enter the healthcare field, and nursing stood out to me as a way to blend my passion for patient care with my desire to work directly with individuals in need.

Nursing school quickly became the natural starting point for my aspirations, as it offers an opportunity to build a strong clinical foundation while fostering empathy, communication, and problem-solving skills. During my time in nursing school, I have come to appreciate the complexity of the healthcare system and the importance of holistic, patient-centered care. Nurses play a vital role in patient recovery, often acting as the first line of support and advocates for patients’ well-being. I find deep fulfillment in providing direct care and making a difference in the lives of patients, whether through administering treatments or simply offering a comforting presence.

However, as I’ve progressed through my nursing education and gained more experience, my ambition to expand my impact has grown. I began to feel the call to further my studies in medicine, driven by a desire to have a broader and more influential role in patient care. Becoming a physician would allow me to engage in complex diagnostic work, contribute to medical research, and be at the forefront of advancing healthcare practices. But my journey doesn’t stop there. I also want to combine my medical expertise with a commitment to addressing health inequities.

My long-term goal is to establish a nonprofit organization focused on providing healthcare resources and services to underserved communities. Throughout my nursing experiences, I’ve seen the stark differences in access to quality care, especially in marginalized populations. I want to help bridge these gaps by creating a nonprofit that not only provides medical care but also offers education and resources to empower individuals to make informed health decisions. Whether it’s through offering free health screenings, providing mental health services, or creating initiatives to promote health awareness, I want to ensure that no one is left behind when it comes to healthcare access.

Once I’ve built a solid foundation in nursing and contributed to the healthcare community through my nonprofit work, I plan to return to school to pursue my medical degree. I believe this path will allow me to approach medicine with a unique perspective—one shaped by my experiences as a nurse and as someone who has worked directly with patients in diverse settings. The intersection of nursing and medicine will not only enrich my understanding of patient care but will also strengthen my ability to lead change in healthcare systems and further my mission to improve health outcomes for all.

Looking toward the future, I am excited about the ways in which my education, my nonprofit endeavors, and my eventual career as a physician will all align to create positive change. I want to be a healthcare provider who not only treats illness but also advocates for the holistic health of the community. Whether through direct care, leadership in public health, or nonprofit work, my goal is to use my skills to ensure that every person, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to live a healthy, fulfilling life.

In conclusion, my passion for nursing has been the foundation of my academic and professional aspirations, while my desire to serve communities in need has led me to expand my vision to include opening a nonprofit and eventually attending medical school. I am committed to using my education and experiences to help create a more accessible, equitable healthcare system. By combining my nursing skills, my future medical expertise, and my work in nonprofit initiatives, I hope to leave a lasting impact on healthcare delivery for underserved populations and work toward a future where everyone has access to quality care.
