Who I Am by Kaitlyn - December 2014 Scholarship Essay

Who I am would not matter without my education. I have been taught from kindergarten through 12th grade in the same district. I have achieved so much in these 13 years that I would not have without education. I have been able to find my love of history, my own voice, and my own group of friends just by going to school for 13 years.

My love of history stemmed from learning in school, but also from buying history books from the school book fair. I loved learning everything about the Greeks and Romans when I was twelve.Throughout my high school career I learned even more about them, and other ancient peoples that made me want to study anthropology in college. My education shaped me into a little history nut that can’t get enough.

When I was younger I was loud and a bit of annoyance in school, but when 6th grade came around I became quiet and closed off in school. It was because everyone was always smarter than me and had better grades than me, but when I got into high school I learned that I needed to make a voice of my own and answer questions and get involved. I was taught to be a leader and that it is okay to speak up when I need to. I may still be timid, but I am working on speaking more in class when I am given the opportunity. My education shaped me into my own person.

Most of my friends I have met because of school. I started out knowing everyone in my class to only some, then having classes with none of my friends. It made it difficult for me to speak up because I had no one in those classes. When I was in 8th grade I made the best decision of my life to talk to the girl next to me in math. We became fast friends and I even introduced her to her best friends today. We have known each other for 5 years now and I could not be happier. My longest and best friend though, I met in 1st grade and we've been inseparable. We stopped having classes together in 8th grade, but with determination we stayed friends throughout our high school career, which paid off, since we have 3 classes together the last year we’ll be together. My education shaped me into a good friend.

My life and the lives of everyone around me have been affected by education. My educated molded me into such an amazing person, I think my younger self would be proud of who I have become. My achievements in school mean the world to me, and I hope to continue on with my education for years to come.
