That Extra Mile by Kaitlyn - November 2018 Scholarship Essay

As an underclassman I loved looking through the yearbook at the graduating seniors. They seemed so put together with their classy graduation pictures and senior quotes. I remember laughing at the funny quotes from TV shows and movies and smiling about the bible quotes and inspirational quotes. But the best senior quotes are the ones that perfectly summed up a senior's years in high school.
I am known as the "runner girl" and have been all four years of high school. When I'm not running at cross country or track practice, I am thinking of my next race; eating healthy, going to bed early, or spending time with teammates. I live for hour long runs to clear my mind, hard tempo runs with my best friends, and mile loops through the forested trails of my home town. Everyone in school knows I love to run, but they also know me as the nice "Mormon kid." I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Days Saints and live my life follow Jesus Christ's example of kindness. I smile and say "hi" to everyone in the halls and make an effort to treat everyone the way I would want to be treated.
If I were to pick my perfect quote I would choose, "Go the extra mile-it's never crowded." It has a double meaning in this case. Being a runner, it applies to running extra long and working hard to achieve my athletic goals. Not everyone is willing to run one more mile when a workout is done, but I am commonly the last one to leave the track after a long day when my coach finally yells, "Go home! Rest up! We need that energy in the next race." I put in hard work by running that extra mile in running, but this quote also applies in one other way. The metaphor of going the extra mile, usually refers to putting in extra effort to be kind or work hard and that is how I strive to live.
Going the extra mile, striving for excellence through hard work and kindness, is the perfect way to live life and a great way to be remembered when graduating high school.
