My Dreamy Classroom Experience by Kainen - July 2020 Scholarship Essay
Imagine walking into a classroom filled with open windows with a beautiful green garden full of blooming flowers, flexible seating such as couches and bouncy balls, a teacher dressed in a bright yellow smock filled with supplies, and no technology in sight! This describes my perfect classroom. I know the last line, with no technology in sight sounds interesting. Technology, in my eyes can be a distraction to learning. For me, I learn through the words my teacher give me, as long as it is interesting. Instead of technology in the classroom, we would use art, movement, bright pictures, and books. This new classroom experience would appeal to me because it would take away all distractions, make the teacher more prepared, a presentation of the outdoors, and help student appreciate research and learning.
I would excel in this classroom oasis full of learning via no technology. Technology can be a distraction, not only to students, but to the teachers as well. For example, a teacher may receive a text or an email in the middle of a lesson and answer it, which takes away from the student's learning. Also, technology can be distracting to the teacher due to complications, such as a PowerPoint not loading, or a video not working. If you have colorful pictures in books and clean worksheets, there are not distractions.
Using art in the classroom is pretty elementary. I remember in elementary school, we would draw a picture after reading a story with our teacher. This could also be used for older students. I express myself through art and could utilize this after reading a selection, working out a math problem, or even drawing a science concept.
Movement is important for students. That is why physical education is incorporated in the school day. Movement can be used in the classroom with geometry lessons, poetry, and history. As the teacher is teaching the lesson, she can use movement to emphasis important concepts. The students can follow these movements during the lesson.
Using textbooks are becoming less common in the classroom. I found an old encyclopedia in my grandmother's closet and I was taken back on how much information was packed in these books. Using books and pictures can help student remember certain concepts and learn how formal language is to be written.
In conclusion, the use of art, movement, bright pictures, and books could help students learn without the distractions of technology giving students a rich learning experience.
