How a business major impacts society by Kai - December 2023 Scholarship Essay

In a world where many can be self centered, there is value in considering others and opportunities to help and support others. As I pursue a major in business, my focus is supporting the community in which I live and work. There are a multitude of ways that my major of business can benefit society. The following actions are how I can impact my community: employing members of my community, inspiring other young people such as myself, and fostering competition within the local business sector.
As a business major and entrepreneur, it is imperative that I become a job creator. The first glaring benefit of creating jobs in my community is that it enables other people to make money and provide for their family. When a person is able to provide for their family and generate a livable wage, everything changes. Home ownership may become an option instead of a thought or idea. Goals of savings are attainable. Yearly vacations to the Caribbean happen. Kids go to college. And the list goes on… These options are attainable from me providing someone a job opportunity.
The next way that my major will benefit society is by inspiring others to also become business creators. Witnessing someone else’s success can be very encouraging as they can envision this as their own reality. Many times, it can be as simple as exposing young people to such opportunities. This can spark interest and may drive them to act on their ideas.. People who I know or that I admire have inspired me just by watching their businesses thrive. Being a beacon of hope can mean the world to young people. Sometimes, people just need someone to believe in. Starting my business, I will be able to fill those shoes. My hard work will make others want to work just as hard and harder for success. This entire process has a domino effect that can easily be contagious. Each one, teach one. It’s a no brainer.
Lastly, my major will foster competition within the business community. What’s better than one business owner? Two. That’s a slight take from a Shawn Carter lyric. As more businesses are created, competition is inevitable. Competition is good for consumers and it’s even better for the community. When businesses win, communities win. Competition forces businesses within the same industry to be innovative and meet the customers’ needs. Prices of goods and services are more affordable. Customer service skyrockets. An influx of quality businesses are produced overall. Overall, there is economic growth and the community has more access than before.
In conclusion, my major in business will benefit the community greatly. Not only will my family and I benefit, but others will also be direct benefactors. The possibilities that can sprout from my path in education are endless. Again, it is important for me to support my community and pay it forward. My hope is that as I open doors for my community that they will pay it forward. When a person can move from an apartment into a single family home, it can change the trajectory of their children. That family now benefits from stability. That family is now able to send their child to an Ivy League school. That family that can now buy their kid their first car. The child now believes anything is possible. That fellow entrepreneur will go even farther. Essentially, we all benefit. From job creators and mentors to competition drivers, my community thrives.
