Helping Others by Kadriya - February 2020 Scholarship Essay

It has always been my mission to positively make a difference in the lives of others through my words and actions. Growing up and being asked the question: “What would you like to be when you grow up?”, I had always replied “Doctor”. It made the most sense to me because the goal of a doctor is to help people. I imagined myself working in a hospital alongside a team of nurses and that is what I was stuck to until I got to high school. In high school I realized that helping people didn’t always mean helping people who are sick and that being a mainstream doctor was not passion. Quickly it occurred to me that I had interests in either Occupational Therapy or Special Education. As a child I often felt myself sympathizing with people who have special needs particularly because I have close friends and family that have special needs. I had observed first hand some day to day struggles that can be faced when individuals are physically/mentally challenged and I knew that that’s what I could see myself doing in the future.
If I were to, in the future, create a nonprofit organization I would make it to help individuals that have special needs because they do not get the recognition that they deserve. That community is an extremely underrepresented community that if given the chance, I would want to help as much as possible. Not only would this organization be the individuals who have special needs, but it would also help their families. At times the expenses for certain care or dietary restrictions can be costly and it is not fair for individuals to suffer because of money.
