A Smile Goes a MIle by Kadijah - November 2019 Scholarship Essay

Going to school is not always the happiest experience. A lot of students can feel lonely and isolated from their peers - unnoticed. We’re social creatures, and we want to feel a sense of belonging with those around us. We all need some attention once in a while, and there are simple ways to give it.

As I’ve found, common courtesy can go a long way. Holding the door for someone, saying good morning, a small conversation, it makes all the difference. When you’re walking the halls to class, you make a lot of eye contact with other people. It doesn’t need to feel awkward when you lock eyes with that stranger. Just offer them a smile, it can make someone’s day.

Through my years in school, I’ve become acquainted with many staff members and students by doing these little things. People who would have otherwise remained strangers have become people who greet me in the hallway and talk to me when they need a friend. You never know when someone just needs a little pick-me-up, so why not give a small smile? Why not say hello?

I believe that in doing these common courtesies, I’ve helped to make people’s days just a bit better. We don’t always need a lot to make us happy. Noticing someone and treating them kindly can help a lot, and making school a happier place can help everyone.
