Thinking outside the box by Justyn - October 2018 Scholarship Essay

The phrase thinking outside the box means that you do not limit yourself to the normal way of seeing things as most people tend to do. In order to achieve more or to get the best outcome for something we have to stretch our imagination a bit more. Some people may say you think unconventionally, you try to see things from various perspectives. When we think outside the box we find ways to come up with solutions before the problem arises. That is, before we confront a unique situation, one should have some ideas already foreseen as to knowing how to deal the problems.
As it relates to my program of study, I am currently pursuing an Architectural program, but I am also researching other fields of job opportunities to be used alongside or as substitute. The average student may only be thinking of one set career choice, however it is best to have two or three other thought out options. This makes career change smoother and easier to accommodate because these were solid alternatives.
Learning a new hobby or class helps you to widen your scope of focus. Continuous education by learning a new topic will not only teach you a new set of facts and figures, it will teach you a new way of looking at and making sense of aspects of your everyday life or of the society or natural world you live in. This in turn will help expand both how you look at problems and the breadth of possible solutions you can come up with.
Looking at things from different way can apply as well. Turning something upside-down, or examining from the back or side physically or re-imagining it. That can help you see patterns that wouldn’t otherwise be apparent. The brain has some pattern-making habits, changing the norm of things can hide the more obvious patterns and make other patterns emerge. For example, you might ask what a problem would look like if the least important outcome were the most important, and how you’d then try to solve it.
Learning another language for use in the event that you decide to travel is another proactive way of existing. The world is an exciting place and everyone wants to see other countries, why wait until you arrive in the country of your desire to try to know how to get around. If we decide on some countries to visit, we should start learning about the culture and their food and the customs and also how to communicate with the people.
Sometimes one should start a project from the end and try to work backwards to see if the resolution is possible. You have to learn to embrace mistakes and incorporate them into your projects, by developing strategies that allow for random input, working around chaotic situations. This is a way of thinking outside the box also. Asking someone for advice that you would not normally ask can give you a different perspective on the situation. As long as you put value on the person’s ability to assist with the problem.
I play the saxophone, however despite my musical abilities I would need to look at other areas of performance so that I am all rounded and refreshing. For example, if I learn how to act in a muscial, I would not only be able to play the instrument but also to engage in acting and learning a new skill that might prove beneficial in later years.
In concluding, it is always positive and worthy to think outside the box to gain innovative ideas tat can help one to solve many problems. Do not run with every idea that you are presented with. If someone tells you to build a house with straws, you very well know that is not strong hence the idea is not worthy of consideration. the idea isn’t to do what everyone says, but to jog your own thinking into a more unknown, unresearched, unproven path.
