The only New Year's Resolution that will work by Justin - January 2016 Scholarship Essay

Every single year is a blessing. Truly, look back on your life. As we grow older, we must learn from not only our mistakes but to also learn true appreciation. Not everyone makes it for another year. Although our population is at a surplus, that does not mean everyone will make it alive. Just as Mark Twain put it, remember that statistics are not what they may seem. More importantly, do you want to end up as a statistic? Not in my case. I truly believe that by becoming more selfish, I will become the best version of myself. By becoming selfish, I will stand out as the student I was meant to be. I will show that selfish is good, important, and key in order to succeed.

To begin with, most people frown upon selfish behavior. This is because it is only mistaken by the masses that follow each others' fallacious opinions. That being said, a true friend understands someone is worth their time by viewing them as driven, stand out individuals that do things outside the box. Friends also respect each other, but more like minded people will tend to comprehend this behavior as good in order to succeed. These are the people that I wish to be like and make friends with.
In addition, it should be noted how important it is to exhibit selfish behavior. You cannot take care of anyone until you take care of yourself. I will keep this in mind every step of the way by studying as much as possible, outdoing my opponent every chance like a competition. You always want to stay ahead of the game. You lead by example and then others will follow. Perhaps if they do so, I will not need to take care of them in the future.
Lastly, should anyone forget what it means to be selfish, they must define themselves, first and foremost. Are they driven or are they lazy? Either answer could pertain to selfish behavior. That is why I establish it to be key in all aspects. Selfish habits can be good or bad. I intend to make the better choices that are going to make me a better man everyday. In the real world, you pay for everything yourself both financially and physically. My time and money will be going toward physical fitness and studying rather than partying. Both are selfish and taxing, but only one is going to show a better me for the future.
To conclude, I do believe that with these selfish habits, I will indeed become the best student I have ever been. If people believe this behavior to be negative, then perhaps they too should rethink their New Year's Resolution? After all, this will decipher where I am in the future and where they will be as well. I keep Reagan in mind, wondering where I will be in five years? It's the steps we take now that ensure we didn't squander our time. This new year, I will be a better student. Selfish behavior is good, important, and key to becoming the man I was meant to be.
