A Different Way To Learn by Justin - September 2024 Scholarship Essay

My favorite non traditional way of learning is to just practice the skill. This applies to any sport or musical instrument I am familiar with. I am an avid tennis player and I wanted to play pickle ball. By observing the game first, I was able to learn the rules. By the time I learned the rules, I started to play games with others. The fundamentals of pickle ball was very similar to tennis. This made the transition of learning pickle ball easier for me. Although, I may not be great at pickle ball, my determination and practice will get me there.

Currently, I am learning how to play the guitar outside of school. I have a musical background in piano. This knowledge has helped me to self tech myself how to play certain songs on the guitar. As I listen to the chord of the guitar, I practice it repeatedly until it sounds correct. Having a guitar in my dorm room, keeps me closer to music. It gives me an outlet from the day to day classes I take. Although I am not taking formal lessons, I am able to apply what I know into a new skill.
