Varsity Tutors Scholarship Essay by Justin - December 2023 Scholarship Essay
“Biology is not just about memorizing facts, but understanding the systems and processes that make life possible.” Has anyone told you about how important biology is to the world we live in? Biology is the scientific study of life with the most notable advancements stemming from evolution. My long term goal is to become a cardiac electrophysiologist, and with my major, in Biological Sciences, I plan to benefit society through finding new ways to cure people from research in my sector of the medical field, extending lives through arduous procedures, and serving as an example of what a healthy human should look like.
Firstly, I plan to use my Biology major to do research and find new ways to cure people of their cardiac diseases. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in 20 people have a coronary heart disease. The biggest reason for heart disease comes from exercise and overall health. Without proper exercise and nutrition, your heart will not be able to function properly since it does not have a change in blood flow. This is evident in my grandmother who has had high blood pressure due to improper nutrition. She was on medication for the problem, but has since gotten off of them due to daily exercise and a change in diet. I would like to help society through my research of those with diseases such as high blood pressure and cardiac cancer and how that is linked to diet and exercise.
Secondly, I would like to benefit society through my practice as a cardiac electrophysicist. In short, an electrophysicist is someone who implants pacemakers in people’s hearts. According to the National Institutes of Health, the average life expectancy after 10 years with a pacemaker is 60%. This might not seem like a high number, but most of the people tested were excessive smokers and did not exercise, meaning the pacemaker increased their quality of life. The average surgery only takes an hour and is not as invasive as a heart transplant, meaning more people can receive the surgery continuing the population, as a whole.
Lastly, as a Biological Science major, I want to serve as an example of what a healthy human should look like. Health is put into the curriculum by a lot of professors due to the new discovery of diseases and their prevention measures. According to the National Institutes of Health, most students in Biological Science majors are not as healthy as their counterparts. This is due to being introduced to the new college scene and the freedom that comes with being away from home. For example, this was true my first year on campus where I gained 50 pounds, but was able to lose 75 pounds once I learned that fat was a product of the foods being eaten and the cells store fat for later, making you gain weight. As a surgeon, you get to see first hand the effects that health has on others. I want to be a beacon for people to see, good health is achievable.
In conclusion, I plan to benefit society through finding new ways to cure people from research in my sector of the medical field, extending lives through arduous procedures, and serving as an example of what a healthy human should look like. In the words of clinical psychologist Jordan Peterson, you are simply a node in a network where you might interact with 1,000 people in your life. While I can not change the entire world, I plan to make a change in my immediate circle.
