A Hope For Public Schools by Justin - July 2022 Scholarship Essay
I fully believe changes to public education systems are necessary for the future. Many children will go through a public school system. It is pivotal that they get the best education possible at any level of that schooling. It is the foundation and building block of their future.
In my time growing up, I have realized too many issues with public school systems. Not all systems are at fault, but there are many that need improvement. In most small communities, the school does not receive a great amount of funding. It feels like the school is the last of the town's worries. In my community, the golf course and public pool received more funds than the school did. There needs to be better ways to bring in money to the schools alone.
The education in small town schools must improve as well. I have personally witnessed very sad attempts of "teaching." Small, public schools will hire someone just for their sports resume. That teacher will neglect the actual class they are required to teach. I have seen multiple classes sit around for a period and then get easy A's. The specific teachers only focus on their coaching career and do not education the students in their course. The system has to be better are enforcing teachers to actually teach. They need to stop only caring about if they can coach instead of teach.
I went through high school and feel like I missed out on crucial education. There were definitely good teachers and I did learn a lot. However, I did not learn enough "real world" information. I left high school not knowing anything about insurances, taxes, key living situations, important buy/sell situations, and other knowledge that we need as humans. There was little to no emphasis on teaching students about what will actually happen after high school. Some students in theses systems are left stranded and feel lost whenever they face real situations. That is never acceptable and the school systems need to help these children before it is too late.
