Microeconomics: Changing the World by Jungwon - September 2017 Scholarship Essay
One elective that I took as a junior was Microeconomics AP. At first, I was extremely afraid to take the class, because I did not know anything about economics. Also, I was not really interested in learning about economics. However, I wanted to give it a try, which turned out to be the best decision I have ever made.
The class is a college level class, so it is meant to be difficult; however, my teacher, who has won the “best teach of the year” award three years in a row, encouraged us to keep up with the class, because it is “worth” it. Obviously, he was not wrong. The class was so worth it. Period.
First, we learned about the basics of Economics. We had to read some articles about Adam Smith, how pencils were created, and more. I was surprised at myself, because I actually had a lot of fun reading the articles and learning about how every decision that I make has costs. For example, right now, I am writing this essay about economics. However, I could be doing something else; I could make some brownies, do my homework, or even sleep. The list that I just mentioned in the previous sentence is called my opportunity cost. Instead of doing my “opportunity cost,” I am writing this essay, because it is very important to my education, my future, and my life.
As you can see already, this course has allowed me to look at the world with a different perspective. Whenever I face a problem, I think of the costs and try to equal the marginal benefit and marginal cost to make the best decisions. After taking this class, I have grown as a person, a student, and an educator. I strongly believe that if you have a strong passion towards any classes you like, you will succeed. I also think that classes that you take at school are not just “classes.” They are life-changing moments in your life. No one should take education as granted. It is worth so much. Period.
