Empathy: A Core Trait of a Leader by Juliette - December 2021 Scholarship Essay

The term “leader” evokes ideas of strength, dominance; a person that inspires. I believe that those traits take a backseat to the importance of empathy. Keeping people in line, doing what they are supposed to do, is worthless if it is done without care.

A leader who does not exhibit empathy is fundamentally a bad leader. They lead without considering the needs and well being of those who follow them. In some situations, they might run an efficient workplace or project, but their subordinates will suffer. A leader without empathy may refuse to allow time off, berate their workers, not listen to criticism or ideas, and have expectations that people are unable to meet.

Inspiring people is a trait that many believe a leader should have. While this is essential, inspiring speeches will do little to boost morale if nothing else is being given. Inspiration also means empathizing and sharing struggles, building people up instead of knocking them down, and allowing others to pitch in and take the spotlight.

Leadership, at its core, is a team effort. A team allowing one of their own to be in charge. A true leader would take that chance to pursue the group’s goals, help take on burdens, and better themselves and their teammates. A true leader leads with understanding and empathy.
