Granting worthwhile gifts through English by Julie - October 2016 Scholarship Essay

With english being the most common spoken language in America, and third most common language spoken in the world, it is vital to have a thorough understanding of this subject. Not only is language important in writing, but it is necessary for communication and interacting. Without literacy and fluency in speech, no person could express themselves appropriately. Thus, if the roles were reversed, I would teach English since it allows room for personal character, enhances communication skills and can be carried into other subjects.
I have taken Honors English for two years, AP Language for one and am currently studying AP Literature as a senior in high school. With each passing year, this subject has allowed me to open my eyes to broad styles of writing and new pieces of literature. This is the only subject that one can truly add personality into their work. Writers are able to develop a specific, unique style. This sense of individuality cannot be explored in other subjects such as math, where all of its practices are concrete and undebatable. As a teacher, I would want each of my students to feel distinctive and this can only be succeeded within English.
As an English teacher, I would feel fulfilled because I would be able to grant my students with the gift of communication. The way one speaks and writes often defines who they are; a well-spoken person is typically perceived as being intelligent and even of high class. English class not only enhances grammar and speaking skills, but it also increases the confidence needed when speaking to others. The way one utilizes the English language could be the breaking point of getting employed, making friends or successfully making a speech. Communication is essential in all of these aspects and only an English teacher could open one’s eyes to this quality.
English skills are transferable to other subjects and can improve one’s performance in their overall academic experience. It is common to write research papers and essays in each subject. If english skills are weak, it would be extremely difficult to be successful in producing these papers. Science involves writing abstracts, math includes immense amounts of reading and history demands for an understanding of the past, which is acquired through text based documents. Although these are just three of the various academic studies, they all tie back to English. Proper writing and the ability to read well comes into play in all fields of study. To me, it is the most important subject because it is so beneficial to understand and useful in all aspects of life.
And so, with the English language progressively becoming more common across the globe, it would be my top choice to teach in this subject. Not only is it vital to speak well and write with style, but it is truly the building blocks of every other academic field. A world without communication would be dystopian like and rather boring; english is key when it comes to being successful in everyday life and it would be honorable for me to be a teacher in this study.
