Overcoming Obstacles to my Education by Julianne - January 2016 Scholarship Essay
Every New Year, most people come up with New Year’s resolutions to help improve or change their lives for the better. I have quite a few myself. I want to lose weight, get in better shape, eat healthier, and be a better person. These are the usual resolutions people come up with. However, in addition to all of those I want to be more outgoing and participate in all aspects of my life as much as I can, especially school. I really think that going through with this resolution will make me be a better student.
I am generally a very quiet and shy person, especially in the classroom. Whenever a teacher asks a question, I do not raise my hand even if I know the answer. Whenever I have a question regarding our current course material, I am often afraid to ask the teacher. Presentations are a whole other burden for me. I despise and dread them. I think this really impedes my education. I want to be able to ask and answer questions without fear and I want to give amazing class presentations without stuttering and having face turn tomato red. Overall, overcoming these impediments will help me become a better student and thrive in the future.
All of my fear and anxiety happens because of my social anxiety, but I really think I can work to overcome it. In college, I need to have no fear talking to my professors to make sure I understand what we are learning. I need to be able to give oral presentations effectively. I know I can overcome these challenges to be the best student I can be for the rest of my senior year and for my future in college.
