"This Class I Shall Pass" Podcast by Julianne - August 2018 Scholarship Essay
My podcast, “This Class I Shall Pass,” is centered upon aiding students in high school and in college classes who require assistance on the fundamentals of writing essays. “This Too I Shall Pass” is designed to answer the most common questions students have about their essays and how to write them. Every aspect of writing a paper, from planning to proofing, is addressed in this podcast. To be more interactive with viewers, a Twitter hashtag called #AskToPass has been created that allows users to tweet out their questions for me to answer.
One question on this podcast that has been answered in the past is “how to stop procrastinating on starting that paper” where we discussed how important it is to get an early start on assignments to avoid that 11 PM “my-paper-is-due-at-12-and-I-just-started” situation. Other topics that have been explored extensively are “how to not make common grammar mistakes” where a refresher course was offered on grammar errors that teachers mark off for, as well as “the best way to fight writer’s block.” No matter how privy a student may consider themselves at writing essays, there are always more questions to be answered. That is why “This Class I Shall Pass” offers such a wide variety of advice for students.
Special guests are often on the show, such as professors and teachers who do a tell-all session in what teachers REALLY look for in essays, and what they absolutely do not recommend doing while writing a paper. Advice coming from these educators includes why you should not use a thesaurus to try and substitute in a long, fancy word or phrase in every sentence, and how to stay on the topic at hand while trying desperately to fit in the required 8 sources.
“This Class I Shall Pass” allows for a broad range of questions to be asked from students that all fit under the topic of helping them succeed in writing their essays as best as they can, which can often be a daunting task. This is why humor is always incorporated into the bi-weekly episodes of the podcast, because it eases the seriousness that tenses listeners up and allows them to fully focus in on the discussion to gain an understanding of how to write and structure a high school and college essay. Making the topic of essays light hearted allows for a new attitude to be determined, which is step one of writing a good essay.
The beauty of this podcast is that every bit of advice applies to all essays that are being written, and perhaps is why it is so popular among young people. It does not matter whether listeners are writing a narrative, argumentative, or rhetorical essay, all suggestions are generic to all papers and can be utilized accordingly. Students writing a literary analysis over two short stories for English class can use advice for how to cite sources in MLA just as a student writing an essay for Chemistry over the history of Mendeleev’s periodic table can.
