Why College Education is Important to Me by Julia - April 2020 Scholarship Essay
Educating myself is the single most important thing I can do to change the direction of my life. If I, as a student, want a successful career, then I need to learn to become more independent and break out of my shell. I also need to learn time management and how to be socially active without ignoring my studies. I believe obtaining a college education is a great way to instill everything I was taught from Kindergarten to 12th grade and will teach me how to change and grow in life after college.
When in college, I can learn to become more physically, mentally and financially independent. The first year away at college might be an adjustment for me, not having my parents there to tell me when to study, clean and do other chores. It will be up to me to learn how and when to do those tasks. College is the bridge between childhood and adulthood. This adjustment is a chance for me to reflect on the person I was in high school and the type of adult I want to be. If I were the type of student in high school who sat quietly in the back of the class, I can use my college experience to become more outgoing.
Not everyone is a master of time management by the age of 18; it is a skill that takes a lot of practice. College is a great place to learn time management. Let’s say I have a paper or assignment due on a Tuesday and two other exams that require five hours of preparation and an additional quiz on Friday. Properly preparing for these assignments, tests, and quizzes will be up to me. If I am involved in college athletics, even more, will be on my plate so learning how to properly manage my time will be very important. Being better than average at time management will have extreme benefits for me throughout my life.
Not living at home can be intimidating, to say the least. Joining campus clubs and organizations will be a great way to help make new friends and help develop a new community. Activities will help me build confidence and helps enhance our leadership and teamwork skills. If I need a break from studying, I can find a club or organization that is of interest to me and join and attend the meetings, etc. College offers so much more than just a degree. It provides activities and friendships that will help expand my horizons.
College is more than just an education. Handling situations inside and outside of the classrooms will help me take the next steps into adulthood. I, as a student, need to make my college days as beneficial as possible for not only me but for my parents and my future careers. This is why I feel a college education is one of the most single important things I can do. My college education is vitally important to me now and to my future. My teachers, parents, and friends will be proud of me, but most importantly I will be proud of myself.
