Do Not Let the Fear of Failing Stop you From Trying New Things by Julia - March 2019 Scholarship Essay

Highschool, a time of change, temptation, goals, and fear. These captivating four years of high school will help you grow as a person and be fulfilled with success and failure. However, you, as an incoming freshman, cannot be afraid to dip your feet in new waters due to the fear of failure. These next four years will produce several new opportunities to expand your comfort zone. Going into high school, your life experiences are intermediate. These next four years will develop your maturity level, educational connections, and future goals. This being said, my advice to you is to take the extra step, go the extra mile, fail a few times, and make sure to step out of your comfort zone. Yes, you may be comfortable with the adventures and opportunities you have encountered before high school. However, over these next four years, try something you are not overly knowledgeable with, test your talents, and learn something new about yourself. As we go on this tour, picture the new opportunities you could come across over the next four years.
You have probably heard from several people; high school will go by in a blink of an eye. It may sound cliché and I doubted it too, but as I crossed the graduation stage and grasped my hands around my diploma, it became a reality. These four years truly are some of the best days and will go by faster than you think. Therefore, you should not dread the week and just wish it was the weekend. You need to take all the chances you can to try new things. Test out the sport you have been interested in, join a new club, and strive to have the best grades you can imagine. Most importantly, do not subject yourself to one thing or one person. You cannot enter into high school thinking you already know what you want, who you want to be friends with, or what clubs/activities you will join. One of the main things I learned was that you must give everyone and everything a chance. For if you do not, you will miss new adventures and opportunities to try something unique and different.
You still may be questioning my advice and wondering what benefits you will gain from stepping out of your comfort zone. So, let me tell you the moment when I realized that I needed to try something new. One day I recognized that I was restricting myself to a certain group of people and partaking in only one sport, cross country. To me, this became my daily routine. As time went on, I realized I needed to do more over the course of the next four years. I decided to sign up for my high school PEP club. PEP club was a group of people who would participate in pep rallies, attend school sporting events, and lead student sections. This club allowed me to get more involved at my school, become more social, and make memories I will never forget. I never pictured myself leading a crowd or creating cheers, but this club allowed me to soar above and beyond what I was use to.
As we finish this tour, I hope you all gained a piece of advice that you will not forget. I truly wish that as you enter high school, you will partake in new clubs and activities. Even if you do not end up enjoying the activity, you can always find a new one. The opportunities in high school are endless, and the fear of failure should not stop you from trying. Finally, time will fly by, so create endless memories and make it unforgettable.
