Finding A New Piece Of Your Heart by Julia - November 2017 Scholarship Essay

Diversity is a beautiful thing. To take a step back and gaze around at our world, is to be able to see said diversity, and appreciate it. In light of recent news highlighting the violent hatred rifling throughout our world, it appears that individuals have lost sight of this, leaving the idea in desperate need of restoration.
In my mind, you can never truly understand someone until you have per say, “walked a mile their shoes.” This same concept can be applied to travelling. Throughout my life I have always been intrigued with the idea of travelling the world, partaking in as many adventures as I could. Now, I stand as a high school senior, preparing to pack up my life and leave for college, beginning the next chapter of my life. In many cases, that is an adventure in itself. That being said, the fact that thousands of prestigious educational institutes across the world offer options to study abroad is overwhelmingly exciting. Studying abroad is far more than just an opportunity to pack up shop and moved across the ocean for a semester. Rather, it’s a chance to grow. You can learn about anything you want to in this country. Pick up a book, make a few clicks online, your access to the world is seemingly unlimited. That is indeed one of the great benefits of this country. However, I remain a firm believer in that you will never truly learn and understand something new until you are experiencing it for yourself. In this case, it is studying abroad within the confines of a new culture. It is already an honor to be able to attain a higher education at a university within the United States, so the idea of furthering this same education in a new country is irresistibly exciting. Being allowed the opportunity to study abroad in college would enrich not only my education, but my life as a whole. Meeting new people, making new friends, expanding my horizons into a brand new culture would help me to grow as a person, and being able to leave college with such once in a lifetime opportunity would leave me with a different type of education, which is far more than I could ever hope to achieve.
