College Excitement: The Value of Learning by Julia - November 2016 Scholarship Essay
What expectations do seniors in high school have for college? Unfortunately many students feel that partying and socializing are the only two things in life that matter. Almost all teachers and parents preach that is it essential to go to college. Many students who do not wish to go to college are often looked at as different, so they decide to go for their reputation. Numerous teenagers and teachers ask, “What are the expectations for college?”. Without much thought on the subject, students are often frozen still. What is something that you look forward to in college and will be thankful for? For me, it is about learning to be a teacher. Learning new skills and ideas to help another person is one of the things I look forward to the most. The partying, socializing, and negligence can wait. College education is more important.
Growing up in a small town with a wonderful family and high ideals, I knew that I had to set my standards high. Even since I was in second grade, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. I would play school with my mom and I always made assignments for her to do. I even made a school for my cats! Having the opportunity to teach was something that I was always fascinated with. Now that I'm in high school, I've found a new passion for teaching. Helping others with their homework, learning a new language, and even teaching scales on my flute are some things that I love to do. With that realization at my fingertips, I knew that teaching was the right outlook for me.
College may seem scary and stressful, but I will be thankful for the experiences and the powerful lessons that I will learn. Learning to help others is something that is very valuable to me. All my life I have learned to help those in need. College has many amazing experiences, but the education is what I look forward to the most. As I approach my later years in life, I will have peace knowing that I've helped many children. Once I remember those who went to parties and skipped class, I will pity them for the road they have not traveled upon.
