The Want to Succeed Can Lead to Great Things by Julia - July 2016 Scholarship Essay
Teachers have a job that is very crucial to our society. Not only are they responsible for the education of the youth, but they also help to shape the character of their students. As I have attended a small school my whole life, I have found that it is easier to know your teachers on a more personal level. We are not just faces in a big crowd, but people who have the potential to accomplish great things. Our teachers recognize this and push us daily to achieve as much as we can, at the highest level of education. The most important lesson I have learned from a teacher is to fully embrace who you are as a person and to never sell yourself short.
My College in High School (CHS) Biology teacher is one of the most sensitive and understanding people I have ever met. She realizes the importance of every creature, no matter how small. This sensitivity carries through when dealing with her students. Even when she is teaching, she realizes if one of her students is acting differently; she does not hesitate to assist them in any way she can. This inspires me to be a better person and realize that sometimes people just need someone to talk to, because life can be quite challenging. Along with that, she encourages everyone to be themselves and does not judge our very unique personalities. Being yourself is so strongly encouraged in her class; this not only makes the class exciting to go to, but also makes the learning environment comfortable and easy to thrive in.
The class is quite difficult, and she realizes this. Although it is so challenging, she helps us find ways to succeed. Unlike some other teachers, she really makes herself available to her students. She is willing to help at almost anytime, even when it is not convenient to her. She is aware of all that we are capable of, and for this reason is not satisfied with average. This pushes us to complete better work. It is a difficult class, but through enrichment activities it becomes more than just big scientific words on paper.
I was extremely hesitant to take her CHS class because I had heard from upperclassmen just how difficult it was. I almost did not take it, but she convinced me that if I worked hard enough I could do it. Through this class we had the opportunity to go observe an open heart surgery. This is when it really became clear to me that I wanted to be involved in a medical profession, more specifically nursing. This opportunity would not have been presented if I did not take this class, and I would have not experienced such an amazing thing. I ended up doing very well in the class. This showed me that one’s want to succeed has to be greater than their fear of failure.
Overall, Miss Talamo has showed me what it means to be self-less and have a genuine care for everyone and everything. She goes above and beyond in finding new ways to make her class great, making those around her want to achieve great things as well. She has showed me that even if you do not think you will be successful, it does not hurt to try because great things could result. The lessons I have learned from her are countless and her personality continues to impact my life.
