Challenges by Jules - April 2023 Scholarship Essay

As a student, I would want to try to give back to the community and people who helped me achieve my goals and encouraged me to pursue my dreams. As a person, I want to make a difference in people’s lives that are struggling and are not able to afford to help themselves. With unlimited time and money I could afford to spend my life helping others in a slightly different way than I do now. I do not have unlimited time and money so the time and effort I put into helping others is even more precious to me.
As an aspiring Clinical Psychologist I have planned to dedicate my career and most of my life to helping others with their mental health and other essential needs. My studies have given me the tools to effectively manage a budget and calculate statistics, which would help me plan a spending strategy. Just because I have unlimited money does not mean that I have to not keep track of who I am helping, how I am helping, and what else I can do to help. I do not think I could solve world peace but I could potentially help solve world poverty.
I would have to hire an assistant, accountant, therapist, and dietitian. My accountant would obviously have to track my expenses and see where I can help next. The world is not always a good place so I would need a therapist to talk about the atrocities that I see as I travel around the world helping people and helping animals. Plus, it is stressful to become a billionaire overnight. I would need someone to keep my head on straight. One assistant, maybe five assistants, would help organize my schedule and make allocations for my time so that I can aid as many different people, organizations, etc. as possible. A dietitian is not an option. I have to eat and I need to stay healthy.
In my education I have learned the history of the world, the inner workings of the mind of humans, and I have seen the stars, etc. My studies have taught me how to be empathetic, how to see the light in the most dark circumstances, and to cherish my ability to learn. My ability to learn allows me to constantly learn from others but also to use the knowledge that I have to pass along. Empathy is vastly different from sympathy. An empathetic person is able to understand where someone is coming from and even if you have no idea what they are feeling there is a bridge to understanding. I am able to talk with someone who has experienced horrible things and even if I have not I can find a way to communicate and help them. Even in the darkest room there is light. Whether it is actually light or a perception. Finding a way to turn a bad situation around and find happiness in the littlest ways is priceless.
