The Class That Changed My Life by Jovanni - August 2016 Scholarship Essay
School has always been a painful burden for me ever since I began high school. I was not use to all the difficult and demanding courses at the time but my perspective changed for completely when I began my junior year. I needed to take a Spanish course in order to complete my bilingual seal requisites so I decided to take AP Spanish Language and Culture. I was hesitant at first because I have never taken an advanced placement class before but since my Spanish if fluent, I was up for the challenge. Never did I think a simple Spanish class would change my life.
Before taking the Spanish class, I was sure we would de activities like most Spanish classes (a lot of reading and comprehension) but it was the exact opposite. During the whole school year I learned many skills that an adult would need in the real life world such as email writing skills, equitable speaking skills and proficient writing habits. Yes we read during the process but we also did diverse activities like presentations and even a one-on-one conversation with a computer. It was nerve-racking at first but this was how we made our presentational speaking skills the best we could. As the school year progressed we not only did activities that benefited us but activities that benefited the community as well.
As classmates we collaborated with each other to form ideas on how we can help our community. We came up with the idea to help low income families with their Thanksgiving preparations. We basically made a list with groceries that would come in a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, made groups of about 4-6 students, and made boxes that we called "Thanksgiving Boxes". During this activity we helped at least 30 families that were struggling to obtain these goods and the look on there faces was all I could remember. This course made me change as a student by becoming more aware and content of the great opportunities and benefits at my disposal. Before I would always be that bothered student that felt obligated to go to school but now when I wake up for school I think I am one of the most grateful students out there. When I see classmates being bothered by the homework or the classwork I just like the tell them one thing, appreciate where you are because someone far away would take the opportunities you have in a heart beat.
