How will I use the money to Positively Impact on my hometown by Jourdan - May 2019 Scholarship Essay

How will I use the money to positively impact my hometown

A little girl dreamed of being a doctor so that she could help people that needed medical assistance. Well, her dream came true because she was an emergency room doctor at Mercy Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. Dr. O’Neal was proud of all of her accomplishments as were her family. Dr. O’Neal also dreamed of getting married and starting a family. That dream was about to come true but something didn’t settle right in her heart about her fiancé. So she called off the wedding. On November 19, 2018, she was confronted outside of the hospital by her ex-fiancé. He shot Dr. O’Neal several times and killed her and 2 other people. This murderer killed himself also. It was later found out that this murderer had mental issues. This person should not have been able to possess a weapon.

People with mental issues should not or have limited access to possess a weapon of any sort. With all the mass shooting that this country has been dealing with, we should have a better policy on gun control especially to people with mental issues. I know that the 2nd Amendment allows us to bear arms but there should be stipulations when that person is mentally unstable. The question that I am to answer is “How will I use the money to positively impact my hometown? The government should take a stronger stance on this policy. To make my community or society a better place to exist, we have to start to access and monitor early intervention programs by having a database with information concerning patients that are at risk in mental illness. This database would give professionals background medical history on a nation to worldwide access. If pediatricians can determine if a child is at risk of being label as suffering from some type of mental illness, that doctor could monitor and prescribe interventions to assist with this disorder on how to cope with self, family, friends, and society. As the person with mental illness grows old, this program plan (medications, support groups, therapists’ notes, family history, success and failure plans) would be accessible to all professionals regardless of state or country he or she resides in. Having a global database to monitor people with mental illness, doctors can collaborate and develop intervention plans that might help to improve their patient’s daily life and the life of others. If this database was operating, maybe Dr. O’Neal will be helping her patients at Mercy Hospital instead of being in Heaven!
