Tutoring Services at Collge by Jou-I - November 2016 Scholarship Essay
The thing I am most thankful for is receiving tutoring services while studying at college in America. As an English learner, I greatly benefited from the tutoring services when I was enrolled in a continuing education program. Without this help, I cannot imagine how much anxiety I would have had while facing my assignments. As a result, I believe that the tutoring services will also play a significant role in my life at college as well.
I was a single mother who immigrated to the United States with my son two years ago. At that time, I was struggling with communicating in English. Sometimes, I couldn’t speak the words even though I had the words in my mind. I felt that there was no hope for me to find a job with my lack of English fluency, until I found the Early Childhood Education (ECE) programs at the School of Continuing Education (SCE). I was glad that this program could equip me with the skills that I needed for work, but on the other hand, I was very worried if I would be able to pass the class. Therefore, I stayed at the Learning Center to study before and after my classes. I felt the Learning Center became my second home in America and the tutors became my friends. Besides editing my course work, the tutors gave me some advice about my job. We also exchanged our values about life, etc. once in a while. My writing skills and speaking skills have improved as the tutors discussed my assignments with me and revised my essays. Most importantly, I gained more confidence in speaking English. I was grateful that the school offered tutoring services.
After finishing several courses at SCE, I was motivated by my instructor to transfer to college for further study. I knew a college education is important for me to better our lives in America. However, I was not sure about studying at college because the assignments there must be more difficult and as an English learner, there is still a plenty of room for me to improve my English. I shared my worries with the tutors. They told me that the college also has tutoring services to help its students be successful and encouraged me by assuring my English ability. Therefore, I decided to go to college and will continue to take advantage of the tutoring services there to enhance my English.
Based on what I experienced at SCE and my needs regarding English language fluency, I believe I will be most thankful for the tutoring experience during my college life because it is crucial for me to complete the courses successfully.
