Heart of the Future by Josnel - February 2015 Scholarship Essay
One book that all high school students should read before they graduate is "Heart of Darkness". This book is the perfect example of literature. With many examples of real world issues and concepts used today, it is the best choice. Not only is the book written in the nineteenth century to give a higher diction than we are used to it has many examples of real world situations such as economics.
Written in a different century means different words and context, one advantage to this is to learn a new style of language we are not used to in everyday language, and elevated way of speaking. A higher diction is related with a higher level of thinking. learning new words is never bad, and studying from where we came from is a great way to learn how to keep moving forward.
The very base of any nation is its wealth, without money there would be no central economy. This novel shows many examples of economics, such terms as, trade off, cost benefit analysis and many more. A trade off is simply a decision, when the decision is made there is a trade off. To get something one must give up something else. To buy a cheeseburger, one must give up currency. Britain wanted to colonize Africa, in that journey the men endured many hardships as the rebels and the country itself fought back to keep them out. Britain's trade off was its men as they tried to obtain Africa.
a Cost benefit analysis is simply an analysis of what one gets to give up what they have. Using the same cheeseburger example, to get a cheeseburger it cost two dollars, cost benefit analysis is just another question, is it worth it? To Britain they lost a few men to try to get Africa, they weighed the cost, and the benefit. A few men for a new colony, not a bad deal to a whole empire.
