Breaking Barriers Through the Arts by JOSLYN - April 2025 Scholarship Essay

I plan to major in performing arts, specifically acting, because storytelling has always been my passion. Ever since I was little, I’ve been drawn to the way performances can make people feel something real whether it’s joy, empathy, or even a new perspective on life. Acting gives me the chance to step into different worlds, live through different experiences, and bring characters to life in a way that connects with audiences on a deep level.
One of the biggest reasons I chose this major is because I’ve seen firsthand how powerful representation in media can be. I want to tell stories that uplift underrepresented communities, including those with special needs, people of color, and families like mine who have faced hardships but continue to push forward. Through my work, I hope to create characters that feel real people with struggles, hopes, and dreams just like anyone else.
Beyond acting, I also want to use my education to give back. I’ve mentored special needs students at my local theater, and I saw how much they just wanted the same opportunities as everyone else. More than that, they wanted to know that people had their backs and wouldn’t judge them when they needed help. My mom, who has battled serious health challenges, is the same way. Seeing her strength and perseverance has inspired me to be someone who lifts others up.
That’s why I created Move by Joslyn, a program designed to bring dance and performing arts opportunities to kids in low-income areas where there are no dance studios. I believe that every child deserves the chance to express themselves through the arts, no matter their background or financial situation. By majoring in performing arts, I hope to expand programs like Move by Joslyn and continue making a difference in communities that need it most.
Majoring in performing arts will allow me to combine my love for storytelling with my desire to make a difference. Whether it’s on stage, in front of a camera, or working behind the scenes to create opportunities for others, I want to leave an impact through my work. I know this path won’t be easy, but my family has taught me that resilience, passion, and determination can overcome any challenge. That’s why I’m committed to following my dreams and using my voice to tell stories that matter.
