Inventors of Tomorrow by Josie - September 2019 Scholarship Essay

Cody Jansen is the smelly guy who sits behind me in English. He smells of Doritos and wears the same faded Radiohead shirt every single day. He often doodles in this black notebook that I'm pretty sure he found in a dumpster. Nobody really knows what he puts in there, but I managed to sneak a peek. At first I had no idea what I was looking at, and I still have no idea what it was, but there were formulas, geometric lines, and precise drawings of would-be, wondrous things. When he's not sketching, he blends in nicely with all the other students listening to their tunes. Now I ask myself, could this be the next Thomas Edison? Wouldn't he relish a group who have the same interests?
When most people think of extracurricular activities, they think of sports, band, maybe a home-economics class or debate team. Now, those are wonderful activities to participate in, however, where does one place the guy who couldn't care less about the NFL, MLB or MBA? What does the musically-declined kid do when the fight song is rehearsed? How about the girl who has better things to do than make a pillowcase out of an old t-shirt? What if there were a group of students from the leftover's pile who came up with the next society-changing invention?
I believe there are inventors who don't yet know they are inventors. Sometimes a person needs other people and influences to show them their strengths and who they truly are. Students need a group of like-minded creative people, a place where they can develop their wildest inventions and make them real. They need to be shown that even the weirdest idea can become real and useful. They need to know how to make their weird ideas real, what to do, who to contact, and where to go. They need to know how to market and advertise their inventions. They need to know that all ideas are important and worth attempting. These inventions could be life-changing for someone. We need an Inventors of Tomorrow club. Cody Jansen needs an Inventors of Tomorrow club. One never knows who the next Thomas Edison will be.
