A Case for the Night Owl by Josie - January 2019 Scholarship Essay

The evening has always been a friend of mine. Nighttime typically ensures a sufficient amount of sleep that the morning cannot always promise, and quite frankly, I love to sleep. Humans function best when they have had enough sleep, and I am well aware of this fact. I feel as though it is my duty to take advantage of that awareness.

Additionally, daytime is a time to play and soak up what the day has to offer. However, the evening is a time where the sun says goodbye for the day, and things begin to wind down.

Personally, I am most productive at night because there are fewer distractions surrounding me that the day usually offers. This also suggests that my peers are night owls too, as I find that I have a decreasing amount of social opportunities as the day begins to die out. I have adapted to the routine of those around me, and the colder nights encourage me to stay indoors.

At the end of the day, I have usually showered and gotten un-ready for the day. My contacts are taken out, my comfy clothes are put on, and my hair is put up. All of my attention is put towards the work I have to do because I am no longer prepared to leave the house.

As a night owl, I can also put healthy limits on the amount of work I do. Because I value sleep so much, I make sure to stop doing my work at a specific time so I can repeat the same cycle the next day.

Thus, I believe that the life of a night owl is the path towards maximum productivity in my life.
